The European Parliament voted last week to set up a temporary committee to look into the causes of the foot-and-mouth outbreak that hit Europe last year.

During a plenary session in Strasbourg, eurodeputies voted 394 in favour of the inquiry, with 155 against and 13 abstentions. The 30-member committee will start public hearings in February and submit its findings to the parliament by February 2003.

Besides looking into the roots of last year's outbreak, including its impact on EU farm subsidies, it will recommend appropriate changes to EU agricultural policy. The final say will rest with the European Commission and the EU member states.
