Banana proposal 3 years too late for Latin America

A new EU proposal to lower tariffs that Latin American banana producers have to pay looks set to be rejected, as a better deal was proposed last July but subsequently withdrawn.

Latin American countries have to pay €176 euros per tonne of bananas exported to Europe, whereas African, Caribbean and Pacific countries can currently export up to 775000 tonnes a year to the EU duty-free.

The EU has proposed lowering the tariff to €114 euros by 2019. However this is three years later than the deal proposed last July, as part of the Doha trade talks.

The 2016 deal was withdrawn as the Doha talks collapsed, and EU officials said the banana agreement could not be sealed without the entire package.
