The supermarket, which is at the higher end of the market, has seen higher sales of carbohydrate-rich foods than is usual for January – the traditional diet month – according to reports.
Sales of pasta were up 22 per cent on the same month last year, and rice and noodles up 34 per cent. Cake sales were also up, by 18 per cent, sausage sales by 20 per cent, and hand-cooked crisps by 18 per cent.
Curiously, lardons saw the greatest increase in sales this January – up 56 per cent!
