FrieslandCampina has announced that it has signed an agreement in principle for DeltaMilk to buy its Bleskensgraaf gouda cheese plant.

The dairy giant has to sell the plant as a condition of the merger last December between Friesland Foods and Campina. It has until the end of 2009 to divest the business, but some commentators had expressed concern as to whether it would meet the deadline.

The definitive agreement needs approval by the European Commission. Subject to this, the transaction is likely to conclude in the last quarter of 2009.

The Bleskensgraaf facility has a production capacity of 39,000 tonnes of cheese. Turnover in 2008 amounted to some €140 million.
