Food price crisis not over yet, FAO

Good cereal harvests this year have not ended the food price crisis in developing countries, warns the FAO, as it gears up for next week’s Hunger Summit.

The UN agency’s latest Crop Prospects and Food Situation report acknowledges that international food prices have fallen from recent peaks. However wheat and maize prices strengthen in October and rice export prices are still higher than before the crisis.

“For the world’s poorest people who spend up to 80 percent of their household budgets on food, the food price crisis is not over yet,” said FAO assistant director General Hafez Ghanem.

The situation is worst in counties that are net food importers, but overall 31 countries are said to need urgent assistance. Drought has meant that the situation is especially grave in East Africa.
