Dutch chemical firm Univar moves into the Polish food ingredients market for the first time, acquiring privately-held enzyme distributor, Mapol.

The polish firm will become part of Univar's Fiske food brand, its European food ingredients unit.

Active for about 10 years in Poland, Mapol distributes a full range of enzymes for food and non-food purposes.

This acquisition marks a new platform for food ingredient sales in Poland and our first entry into this market, a spokesperson for Univar tells FoodNavigator.com.

Initially Fiske will drive into the growing market in Poland, and will later look for opportunities in other East European countries.

Univar, that distributes chemicals to industries from food and pharma to personal care and metallurgy, declined to comment on terms of the Mapol deal, including the acquisition price.

Last year, Fiske Food Denmark linked up with the potato starch firm Avebe to distribute products from the Dutch farming co-operative.

Under the agreement Fiske Food Denmark, will distribute corn, wheat and tapioca starches, maltodextrins, dextroses and modified starches to small and medium-sized companies. Avebe will continue to sell directly to large accounts in Denmark.
