New EU guidelines on the submission of dossiers for substances designed to eliminate microbial surface contamination of foods of animal origin have been published.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) document outlines the requirements of the submission of data to the European Commission for the evaluation of proposed antimicrobial substances.

The revision includes examples of study designs at the laboratory and at the slaughterhouse in order to demonstrate that the substance to be tested demonstrates efficacy. It also includes the factors that should be considered when monitoring the safety and efficacy of a substance that has already been authorized and used, said the food safety watchdog.
