Corbana, the association of Costa Rican banana producers, has formally presented a pledge to cut its net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2012.

The plan, dubbed the Banana Industry Action Plan against Climate Climate Change, was presented to Minister of Environment and Energy, Roberto Dobles Mora. It involves calculating levels and sources of CO2 and other gases by the industry, as a first step towards advising farmers on measures they need to take.

Other elements include creasing carbon sinks through reforestation, cutting back on fossil fuel and fertiliser use, switching to biofuels and biodegradable plastics, using biopesticides and biofertilisers, and implementing energy-saving plans.

Costa Rica’s climate change strategy is a top priority for 2006-10.
