The European business centre for the amalgamated Cargill/Cerestar starch, sweetener and derivatives operations is to move from Paris to Mechelen in Brussels.

The move follows Cargill's recent acquisition of the French supplier of starch, glucose and other starch derivative products Cerestar.

The new office, serving as the base for the European management team and house more than 100 employees from the combined businesses, will open in March 2003.

Referring to Cargill's 2002 acquisition of Cerestar, Guillaume Bastiaens, vice chairman of Cargill, commented:"Our priorities included a smooth integration of the two cultures and the combining of our complementary areas of expertise to produce innovative products and greater value for our customers.

Establishing a new European business centre from which to base our combined business is consistent with these goals and will enhance the development of a new, stronger organisation better able to serve customers."

The new location in Mechelen is situated close to the company's research and development centre in Vilvoorde, also in Belgium. Bastiaens added: "Situating our new office in Mechelen in the centre of our west European customer base is symbolic of the closer relationships Cargill people are forming with so many of our customers."

The centre has traditionally specialised in applications relating to the starch, sweetener and derivatives but will also work with Cargill's cocoa, orange juice, soya processing, oilseed processing, poultry processing and malt businesses which have facilities based in Belgium and nearby countries.
