Brenntag this week announced its acquisition of Italy's Natural World, in a bid to increase its presence in Europe and in the bakery and dairy ingredients markets.

The chemicals distributor presently offers a portfolio of ingredients to the food industry through its specialty chemicals division, including fatty acids, ascorbic acid, citric acid and antioxidants.

While Italy-based Natural World, founded in 1996, supplies a broad range of ingredients to various sectors of the food industry, its greatest expertise lies in dairy and bakery ingredients.

The company's product list is topped with ingredients to improve baked goods, bakery premixes and special flours for bakery and confectionery - and Brenntag is clearly viewing these as an attractive area of development for its own businesses.

Karsten Beckman, managing director of Brenntag Italy, said: "Working jointly with Natural World we are strengthening market segments such as the dairy and bakery industry, benefiting from the outstanding expertise and experience of the company's team in the area of food performance products."

A spokesperson for the company had not responded to FoodNavigator.com's inquiry as to why the bakery and dairy sectors are deemed attractive to the company prior to publication deadline.

But Beckman added that the news will also allow Brenntag to build its existing portfolio with new specialties chemicals and application know-how.

The result of this is a strengthening of Brenntag's position in the Italian market - and, given Italy's strategic location at the heart of Europe, in the European market in general.

Other sectors to which Natural World can cater include beverages, snacks, pasta, sauces and dressings, meat products and desserts.

The value of the acquisition, which closed on July 1, has not been disclosed.

In 2006 Brenntag reported external sales of €6.1 bn across its three divisions (industrial chemicals, specialty chemicals, and international chemicals.

It employs over 10,000 staff at 300+ locations in 50 countries.
