Swedish firm Biomin is to distribute the National Starch nutrition products in Scandinavia, under a new exclusive agreement. The speciality starch group's resistant starches, Hi-maize and Novelose, will all be supplied through Biomin, as well as new products.
Gothenberg-based Biomin has been selected for its strong track record in the nutrition market, although Dat-Schaub, Univar Oy, Univar AS and Engelhardt will continue to distribute National Starch's other speciality food starches in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden respectively.
Hi-maize, a high amylose resistant starch developed by National Starch-owned Penford Australia, and Novelose are aimed at food manufacturers seeking to differentiate products by adding nutritional value. Recent research has found resistant starch to have health benefits both for the bowel and cardiovascular health, as insoluble fibre can lower the glycaemic response and help burn the calories consumed in fat.
Hi-maize, which has also been developed for beverage applications, is already included in several Australian brands, including bread, biscuits and pasta.
National Starch , part of the ICI Group, has sales of €2.63 billion.
